Press Play was designed to evoke social interaction between strangers by sparking sensory stimulation within a once-underutilized space between the Alamance Children's Museum, the public library, and the Alamance Art Alliance Headquarters. Press Play was one of several playable installations along the path. The design was created to appear as if it was bubbling up from the ground on each side of the existing fountain. The two pieces serve as opportunities for passive interactions when walking by and social gathering spaces.
The piece is not just a visual experience but an open-ended communal hub for activity within a public space. You can sit, climb, and lay on the installation's bubble-like form, but when you touch the different colored pads, the piece begins to come to life. Each pad triggers a different sound creating a giant midi pad that people can play with. The form of the work was designed to allow for a variety of social seating interactions to exist. This creates an opportunity that isn't just about the work itself but about how it begins to activate the other artwork around it.
